Flag Description

Hayward began as a small farming community and became a suburb of Oakland and San Francisco starting in the '50s. The current population is about 140,000. Hayward now has a moderate light industry concentration as well as providing homes for commuters to the larger neighboring cities.

There are two colleges in Hayward. Chabot College is a two year community college and California State University at Hayward is a full program institution.

The flag is a basic LOB. This version was introduced in January, 1998, when the new city hall was opened. It consists of a shield with four quarters containing a family, buildings, scales of justice and an open book in blue on a white field. Surrounding the shield is the name of the city. The previous version of the flag dating, to the best of my knowledge, from the '60s, is the same as the current flag but colored peach, blue and white.
