Woodland began as a small farming community named Yolo City. It is located 20 miles northwest of downtown Sacramento. In 1861 the name was changed to Woodland and in 1862 it became the county seat of Yolo County. The current population is about 51,000. Woodland is still an agricultural center, with rice and tomatoes as the primary crops. Recently, several major store chains have established their Northern California distribution centers in Woodland, including Target and Walgreen's.

Flag Description

The flag of the City of Woodland was approved by the City Council on April 1, 1997. It features a white background with a large green oak tree. The date that Woodland was named, 1861 appears on both sides of the trunk in green, two digits on each side. In the upper left corner is a five pointed red star representing Woodland's position as county seat and is similar to the California state flag. At the bottom is a thick red stripe symbolizing the city's foundation. Many of the city's historic buildings were constructed of red brick. "WOODLAND" is written in the red band in white letters using a font often found on frontier signs. The flag was designed by the Woodland Flag Committee.
